A miss-hit Federer forehand gifted Coric the opening break of the second set for a 2-0 lead, before Coric pulled off an excellent lob and smashed an ace down the tee to move clear at 5-3. Reflecting on his semi-final match against Boric, Federer admitted that he could have done a better job in serving, adding, the Croatian had "more punch" than him.

Shanghai: Novak Djokovic will face Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters after the 14-time Grand Slam champion beat Kevin Anderson 7-6 (7/1), 6-3 on Friday.

In contrast, Coric - who is into his first Masters 1000 final - was largely untroubled on his serve.

There was no let-up, though, and a sublime volley had Djokovic cupping an ear to the crowd as Coric failed to break back, the contest finally settled as the 14-time grand slam victor served out the championship. "It's going to be definitely a close match", said Djokovoic.

The second set followed a similar pattern at the start, the 20-time grand slam victor taking the first game after creating a break-point opportunity with a sizzling backhand return.

"I saw Kei was playing extremely aggressive, especially towards the end of the second set", said the Swiss world number two, who has been content with his form this week despite being pushed to three sets in his other two matches.

Djokovic, 31, is on a 17-match winning streak, a run that includes titles at the US Open and Cincinnati Masters.

The 21-year-old got his second straight win over Federer, having beaten the Swiss to lift the Halle title in June.

"I just feel like the date of the Davis Cup is really bad, especially for the top players", said Djokovic, echoing the strong sentiments of Zverev a day earlier.

Second seed Djokovic, who has returned to his brutal best this season with Grand Slam wins at Wimbledon and the U.S Open, will surpass Federer as world number two when the next edition of the ATP rankings are released on Monday.
