China-U.S. Tensions Flare in Testy Pompeo Visit to Beijing

China has stepped up its war of words with the U.S., following a frosty back-and-forth between its Foreign Minister Wang Yi and visiting U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday.

"We would fundamentally change the nature of North Korea's relationship with the rest of the world", Secretary Pompeo told press in South Korea Oct. 8 after the meeting with Kim.

Pompeo is on an official visit to China for consultations on bilateral and worldwide issues, including Beijing's territorial claims in the South China Sea.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday plans were being made for his second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and he thinks "incredible" progress has been made in U.S. talks with the long-isolated country.

Trump emphasised the rapport he says he's developed with the North Korean leader as they negotiate over United States demands that Kim abandon his country's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programmes.

"We will not forget America's help and support to China in modern and contemporary history, but Mr. Pence can not be "superior" for having helped China previously", Zhu said. The South Korean Catholic leader and Kim had another occasion to speak on the last day of Moon's visit to the North. Pompeo didn't meet with Kim on that trip.

Mr Pompeo told reporters in Pyongyang the two "had a great, great visit" and that Mr Trump sent his regards.

The president of the Korean Bishops conference, Archbishop Hyginus Kim Hee-Joong, was present at a dinner for the South Korean delegation in Pyongyang last month, during the third summit between Korean leaders. A second summit in the coming weeks could boost Trump ahead of USA midterm elections in November, but a failure to secure any measurable commitments would undercut what the president has seen so far as a clear foreign policy strength.

I think there's something being released on Netflix soon, a documentary based around that fight, and it will have all the rounds. White told "First Take" on Monday that McGregor has also brought it up to him directly. "I am going to regard this severely.

He also accused the USA of making "a series of moves" on Taiwan and "other issues" that he said hurt Chinese sovereignty.

On a more positive note, Wang said China was still willing to solve the trade dispute with the United States through negotiations, "but they must be conducted on an equal, honest and serious basis".

The dovish Moon, who held three summits with Kim this year and also brokered the Trump-Kim summit in Singapore, said Sunday the "whole world" was watching with keen interest the outcomes of Pompeo's trip.

Stephen Biegun, the USA special representative for North Korea who accompanied Pompeo to Pyongyang, said he offered to meet his counterpart, Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui, "as soon as possible" and they were in discussion over time and place.

The invitation will be delivered by South Korean President Moon Jae-in next week during his visit to the Vatican as part of a trip to Europe.

Moon introduced the archbishop to Kim at the dinner, and the archbishop relayed a message from the pope of peace and prosperity for the Korean people, the Italian news agency Ansa reported.

Pompeo said progress is being made in efforts to denuclearize the country as talks continue for another possible summit between Trump and Kim.

"We will, in short order, be able to talk about when the president will get to meet with him at what will be the second summit".
