Health officials to long-term care workers: Get vaccinated against flu

Following one of the most severe flu seasons on record last in Washington, the state Department of Health is recommending getting vaccinated now as the illness has already started circulating this year.

The CDC says last flu season was the deadliest in at least four decades.

"Just get your flu shot.I get mine every year".

According to the CDC, around 80,000 people died from the flu last winter in the United States. For the upcoming season vaccine manufacturers have estimated distributing up to 168 million doses of influenza vaccine in the U.S. Patients may come to the health department for children's flu shots at the same times as listed above. William Schaffner, MD, NFID's medical director, said in an NFID news release, "Influenza and pneumococcal vaccination are an important part of managing chronic diseases".

It is also important to note that children younger than nine who have not received the flu shot in the past have to receive two shots, spaced out by about a month.

"Evidence from a number of pilot schemes in primary schools across England in 2014 to 2015 showed a 94% reduction in GP influenza like illness consultation rates, 74% reduction in A&E respiratory attendances and 93% reduction in hospital admissions due to confirmed influenza in primary school children". So many people caught the flu that some hospitals and pharmacies across the US ran out of antiviral drugs, Alabama declared a state of emergency and a school district in Arkansas closed all 10 of its schools. "It seems like we're in a better position this year".

The summary of the 2017-2018 flu season was published on the website of the CDC. This is the case for recombinant influenza vaccines. The flu virus changes from year to year, and this year's vaccine protects against the flu viruses that are expected to cause the most illness this flu season.

Officials stress that children need to be vaccinated as well as adults. Drugmakers still grow vaccines in chicken eggs - a technique developed in the 1940s. Vaccines are recommended for nearly everyone age 6 months and older.

"Flu is a really nasty bug and it is not like having a cold".

"Human viruses were never meant to grow in eggs", said Bruce Clark, Medicago chief executive officer.

"Basically, this is a vaccine that can do other things", said the CDC's Jernigan. Certain types of H3N2 can't be grown in eggs without mutations that make vaccines less effective.

The flu vaccine is available from your family doctor or at special clinics in pharmacies or other stores throughout the area. The flu vaccine is the best strategy to prevent the flu.

U.S. Surgeon General Jerome M. Adams, M.D., M.P.H., said he was "embarrassed" by the low percentage, especially since those in assisted living, skilled nursing and similar settings care for people who are among the most vulnerable to flu complications. "Low efficacy rates don't help".
