President Trump has admitted for the first time that the goal of his son's meeting with a Russian lawyer before the 2016 elections was to gather information about his opponent, Hillary Clinton.
The president is calling "fake news" on the reports saying he's anxious about his son's legal exposure on this matter, but in the meantime, there are lingering questions about this, along with Michael Cohen's claim that Trump Sr. personally approved the meeting before it happened. The claim seems to have enraged the president, who denied it by tweaking the story of the meeting once again, tweeting that the meeting was "to get information" and that it was "totally legal" and that Donald Jr.is a "wonderful son". He went on to distance himself from Trump Jr. and the meeting: "I did not know about it!"
As he has in the past, Trump insisted in a tweet that he did not know at the time about the meeting between his son Donald Jr. and Natalia Veselnitskaya, a lawyer with links to the Kremlin.
Emails released by Trump Jr also suggest the meeting was about getting negative information to use against Clinton in the campaign.
He later admitted he accepted the meeting with Veselnitskaya in hopes of obtaining damaging information on Clinton, but said nothing came of it.
President Trump appeared to change his story about the 2016 meeting when he put out the tweet that Don Jr had met with lawyer to collect information about his political opponent.
Trump's personal lawyer Jay Sekulow repeatedly denied that the president was involved in drafting the statement.
Legal experts have often pointed to a possible violation of federal election laws, which ban taking anything of value - which could include information on a political opponent - from a foreign government trying to influence a USA election.
