Donald Trump has signed and gifted an Elton John CD to Kim Jong-un amid denuclearisation talks, in a joking reference to earlier feuds between the two leaders in which the United States president branded the dictator as a "little rocket man".

The talks lasted almost three hours and it was uncertain whether Pompeo would meet Kim Jong Un. It will also include his first overnight stay in the North Korean capital.

"Minister Kang will listen to the outcome of Secretary Pompeo's North Korea trip and hold in-depth discussions on ways to achieve the goals of complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the establishment of permanent peace", the statement said.

Speaking aboard Air Force One on a trip to Montana, Trump said he believed he forged a personal connection with the young autocrat he once pilloried as "Little Rocket Man".

North Korea's participation in the Winter Olympics set the stage for a rapid improvement in relations with both Seoul and Washington, culminating in last month's summit between Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump in Singapore.

But the meeting was low on details, with the two sides emphasizing the need to build trust amid growing doubts about North Korea's commitment to "complete denuclearization" after several reports they were moving forward with their nuclear weapons program.

Also high on the agenda is the issue of the remains of USA soldiers missing from the 1950-53 Korean War.

Instead, South Korea was taking charge of issues related to peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and reunification, Moon Chung-in added.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in Pyongyang to discuss the next steps toward denuclearization following the summit in Singapore.

USA policy has not changed and the State Department is "committed to a denuclearized North Korea", spokeswoman Heather Nauert told journalists accompanying Pompeo on the trip. "Contrary to our military's suspension of joint Korea-U.S. military exercises, North Korea is conducting military exercises on a scale similar to previous years".

"If they're serious, then we can get down to the business of defining the terms of final denuclearisation", said one official.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, President Trump expressed hope for the future toward North Korea. Chosun Ilbo reports that during Trump's first meeting with Kim, the North Korean dictator asked about the nickname. The State Department said its policy remains unchanged. "We are watching closely".

North Korea has said it will not comply with Tokyo's demand for a resolution of the issue of Japanese citizens abducted by the North decades ago unless Japan lifts unilateral economic sanctions, sources close to bilateral ties said Thursday.
