One man can only do so much, and the Lakers probably need another superstar before they're legitimate title contenders capable of matching up with the Warriors and Houston Rockets, among others. The Lakers can afford to be patient in building the team, even if James wasn't on board.

Coming into the offseason, the Los Angeles Lakers were focused on getting a star.

James' management company Klutch Sports Group later confirmed the move.

Furthermore, James was at his most effective from 3-point range, taking five per game and shooting at 36.7 percent. James returned to the Cavs in 2014, then later led the team to their first championship title (2016).

Six-time National Basketball Association champion Jordan defined an era with the Chicago Bulls, but glory in LA - and a title with a third different team - could well give James an edge.

Normally this kind of incident descends into little more than handbags but that wasn't the case on this occasion. The teams are competing in the Asian qualifiers for the 2019 FIBA World Cup .

In a short statement, he said on Instagram: "Thank you Northeast Ohio for an incredible four seasons". But that option vanished after James opted out of his one-year contract extension with the Cavs that would have paid him $35.6 million next season. Rondo could also be an excellent tutor for Lonzo Ball, last year's No. 2 overall draft pick who shares numerous veteran's traits, including slick passing skills and ... an alarming inability to shoot well.

James is considered a rival of retired Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan for the title of greatest player in National Basketball Association history.

Before Sunday's announcement regarding James, George had agreed to a multi-year contract with the Thunder and the likelihood of the Lakers landing Leonard in a trade from the Spurs appeared to be dwindling.

And although the NBA's 2018-19 schedule has yet to be announced, StubHub has listings for the Lakers' home opener - listings that were also subject to the sway of King James influence.

According to The LA Times' Brad Turner, Johnson showed up at James' house at 12:01 ET/9:01 PT on July 1, the minute free agency began, to recruit James to the Lakers. It brought in an estimated $21 million in earned media for Goodyear.
