USA withdraws from UN Human Rights Council

Donald Trump is preparing for the United States to leave the U.N. Human Rights Council.

The U.S. Dept. of State on Tuesday is expected to announce it is withdrawing from the United Nation's Human Rights Council.

USA withdrawal from the council follows efforts by Haley and the U.S. delegation to implement reforms, including more stringent membership criteria and the ability to remove members with egregious human rights records.

"The UN Human Rights Council has played an important role in such countries as North Korea, Syria, Myanmar and South Sudan, but all Trump seems to care about is defending Israel", said HRW executive director Kenneth Roth.

The official says the Trump administration believes staying in the council lends it credibility, and only will rejoin if it reforms. Libya was kicked out seven years ago.

Although numerous officials have said repeatedly that 'America First does not mean America Alone, ' the administration has retreated from multiple multilateral accords and consensuses since it took office.

If the United States leaves the council today it will not be present for the July 2 discussion the council plans to conduct in regards to Israel and Palestine.

When the Council was created in 2006, U.S. President George W. Bush's administration shunned the body.

The US joined the council in 2009 under President Obama.

The move comes after the council voted last month to probe killings of Palestinian protesters in Gaza and accused Israel of excessive use of force.

"The UN Human Rights Council has always been a problem". Members are elected by the U.N. General Assembly for three-year terms and can not serve more than two terms in a row. "The world's most inhumane regimes continue to escape its scrutiny, and the council continues politicizing scapegoating of countries with positive human rights records in an attempt to distract from the abusers in its ranks". The Obama administration sought a seat only in 2009 in an effort to showcase how human rights were an important aspect of USA foreign policy.

The U.S. has always been believed to be preparing to leave the UNHRC over what administration officials say is unfair treatment of Israel, but the expected announcement will come a day after its chief called the Trump administration's family separation policy "unconscionable".

A key question will be where a USA pullout would leave Israel if its biggest and most powerful defender abandons its voting rights or drops out of the council altogether.

The Trump administration is set to announce Tuesday its departure from the United Nations' main human rights body in its latest withdrawal from an worldwide institution. After a year off, Washington was re-elected in 2016 for its current third term.

Other U.S. allies have found it hard to stick with the Trump administration's approach to the United Nations, as countries like the U.K. and France expressed skepticism about the violence on Israel's border last month. In that situation, the USA would be able to speak out on rights abuses, but not to vote.
