D'Souza pleaded guilty in 2014 after the court rejected his argument that he had been selectively targeted and was sentenced to five years in probation that involved mandatory community service and counseling.
D'Souza said the pardon was not something he expected, and he also reiterated what Trump said yesterday about how the case against him was unfair and he wanted D'Souza to be a bigger voice.
Critics said the president was sending a message to people caught up in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into whether Trump's 2016 presidential campaign colluded with Russian Federation, including his longtime private lawyer Michael Cohen, whose business dealings are separately under scrutiny in NY.
Donald Trump told reporters on Thursday that he could add two more names to his presidential clemency list: lifestyle guru Martha Stewart and former IL governor Rod Blagojevich. He also said he might pardon lifestyle guru Martha Stewart, who served time for lying to investigators about a stock sale.
Considering former FBI Director James Comey is tied to both Stewart and Blagojevich's past cases in some way, suspicions were raised even further when it became clear Trump knew little about the individuals he's thinking of pardoning.
This is the fifth pardon of Trump's presidency.
"I knew that causing a campaign contribution to be made in the name of another was wrong and something the law forbids", D'Souza, who had previously argued that he was a victim of selective prosecution, told the judge in the case.
But prosecutors said the charges were nonpolitical and arose out of the FBI's "routine review" of campaign filings.
Priyanka Chopra dating Nick Jonas?
Well, we are waiting for you on the other side Nick. "She's a lovely person and I'm dying now to go to India". If reports are to be believed then Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas are the hot new couple in town.
A tweet sent out by Kardashian West about her visit was later retweeted by Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.
D'Souza was prosecuted by Preet Bharara, a former U.S. Attorney in NY who became a bitter Trump opponent after the president fired him, along with dozens of other federal prosecutors, upon taking office.
D'Souza said he was surprised when he got a call at his office from the president.
On Wednesday, reality star Kim Kardashian West met with Trump at the White House to make the case for clemency for Alice Marie Johnson, a great-grandmother serving life in prison for a first-time drug offense.
"These guys chose to make an example of me", D'Souza said.
Bharara, in a tweet, denied any political influence took place: "The facts are these: D'Souza intentionally broke the law, voluntarily pled guilty, apologized for his conduct & the judge found no unfairness". His 2016 documentary, "Hillary's America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party", attempts a takedown of the former Obama secretary of state.
Some fellow conservatives, however, cheered Trump's move, including Sen.
Trump tells reporters that Blagojevich said something dumb but that "lots of politicians" do and thinks his sentence is excessive. Mr Trump said on Twitter. "The career prosecutors and agents did their job".
