Summer driving could be most expensive in years

We're nearing a turning point in the USA - gas prices are perhaps just a dime away from hitting a peak for the short-term, pending OPEC's meeting in June.

AAA had the local average at $2.82 a gallon Monday, up 11 cents over the last month.

According to AAA, the average for a regular gallon of gas hasn't been this high since June 2015.

The most expensive gas price averages in Georgia were in Atlanta at $2.76 per gallon, Brunswick at $2.75 and Athens at $2.75. The new record high bested the last record, which was set in mid-February of this year.

The Dearborn-based auto club surveys prices at 2,800 gas stations across the state.

When Hurricane Harvey caused oil refineries to go offline in the Gulf of Mexico last September, prices surged by 44 cents to $2.70.

"People start to change their travel behavior when gas gets up higher than $3.50 average and we're not going to be going that high, that's the good news, people can still make their plans, people will still make their plans, it's just going to cost a little bit more", Parmenter said.

Kevin Lanke, a motion picture lighting technician in Redondo Beach, says he's now paying about $3.39 per gallon to fill up the 25-gallon tank in his 2000 Land Cruiser SUV.

Unlike nearly all other retail purchases, most motorists have no idea the extent of state and federal taxes being charged on gasoline because it is rolled into one price.
