Florida-bred football player Shaquem Griffin is defying the odds in the realm of sports.
UCF's Shaquem Griffin, strolling down the red carpet at the National Football League draft on Thursday, had to wait a bit for his name to be called.
Shaquem was very humbled and excited about playing with his brother when Seattle picked him."It was literally like a dream like I was actually imagining stuff and it just started happening", Griffin said in a conference call with reporters after Saturday's selection.
Shaquill and Shaquem were team-mates at Central Florida, Shaquill only agreeing to commit to them if they would also take on his sibling. Griffin lost his left hand to amputation when he was younger.
In 2016, he was named the American Athletic Conference defensive player of the year.
He gained attention at the NFL Combine in March when he ran the quickest 40-yard dash for a linebacker since 2003. "To even have an opportunity to come back, I didn't think I was going to be able to come back and do it ..."
Mnuchin to visit China to discuss trade issues
In a speech earlier this month, Chinese president Xi Jinping said his country would open itself wider to foreign companies. But he adds, "I think we've got a very good chance of making a deal".
RENTON, Wash. (AP) - Shaquem Griffin had walked away from his cellphone, on his way to use the restroom, when it buzzed.
GM John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll have now selected 86 players over their nine drafts together in Seattle. We are going to try to put him in spots where we can utilize the great speed he has.
"Having my brother beside me and to have competition with him, I knew what my ability was and I knew what I could do", Shaquem Griffin said.
"He will be a big factor in special teams. My partner here was kind of a mess, to tell you the truth, when he handed me the phone".
Griffin also bench-pressed 225 pounds (102kg) 20 times, three more than his twin had managed, having attached a prosthetic hand onto the bar.
Griffin starred at college level. His twin brother, Shaquill, recognized the 425 area code that flashed on the screen and started charging after his brother. Shaquill, a cornerback, was a third-round pick of Seattle in 2017. "I guess it's just to see your personality, how you're going to handle a amusing situation like that". He's heard the doubters throughout his career and is ready to prove them wrong again. "I want to show the entire world, no matter if you have one hand, two hands, if you're a ball player, you just play ball", he added.
