Patton Oswalt is speaking out in the stunning arrest in the Golden State Killer case-and his late wife Michelle McNamara's interest in it.

The source says the suspect was caught through "sophisticated" DNA analysis.

"It was sort of a mixture of very extreme positive emotions and then very extreme in the other way-kind of a bitter sweet thing", said her nephew Connor Stratton.

"He was the kind of person you didn't want to make mad", Sonja Gorman said.

After the news of the killer's arrest came to light, McNamara's husband, well-known actor and comedian Patton Oswalt, took to Instagram to credit McNamara's work for helping with the arrest.

DeAngelo, described by neighbors as an oddball and loner known to fly into occasional fits of solitary rage, is suspected of 12 slayings in all. "We're gonna get him, '" Domingo told FOX40.

In March 2017, an Oregon City police officer, working with the California investigators, obtained a court order directing the nursing home resident, a 73-year-old man, to provide a DNA sample.

McNamara's research brought her to Contra Costa County in 2013 and on a tour of crime scenes with Paul Holes, a former criminalist with the Contra Costa County Sheriff's crime lab who recently retired as a Contra Costa D.A'.s investigator.

McNamara wrote in her book that she became interested in cold cases as a 14-year-old girl when a neighbour's murder went unsolved.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Grippi said that the DNA used to zero in on DeAngelo had been uploaded by a relative, according to NBC affiliate KCRA.

Seven years ago, DNA testing linked the East Area Rapist to Cheri Domingo's and Sanchez's murders.

"I think over time she really carried it directly on herself, [she wanted] to give these people something like an answer", Oswalt told Gross.

After he was identified as the suspect, however, prosecutors rushed to charge him with eight killings.

"It just felt like he wanted to be left alone", Sanchietti said of his neighbor, who he said had a reputation in the community for loud, angry outbursts.

Investigators trying to hunt down the so-called Golden State Killer used information from genetic websites a year ago and misidentified an elderly OR man as a possible suspect.
