The International Cricket Council found itself in a spot Wednesday after the person handling its Twitter account inadvertently shared an old video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and self-styled guru Asaram Bapu at a rally.

Asaram was arrested by the Jodhpur police on August 3, 2013 after allegations of sexually assaulting a minor girl, 16 years old, in his ashram in Jodhpur on the pretext of exorsising her of evil spirits.

Three witnesses were killed allegedly by Asaram followers for deposing against the "godman" in the two rape cases.

The Rajasthan police is also working in close coordination with their counterparts in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan in a bid to prevent the galvanisation of Asaram supporters from the neighbouring states.

The judge, Madhusudhan Sharma, announced the prison term for Bapu and sentenced two of his associates to 20 years in prison each for helping him in the crime.

Utsav Bains, the victim's lawyer, told NDTV that he was expecting the court to give Asaram a life sentence. "God bless the victim and family", Ajay Lamba said.

Now, the Indian government is on alert in case his supporters take to the streets to protest over the verdict, as had happened when another charismatic guru, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, was convicted of rape a year ago.

Asaram was on Wednesday sentenced to life for raping a teenager at his ashram in 2013. I was told my parents and I would not live if I made a scene. As per a short documentary available on his official website, Asaram was born in 1941 as Asumal Sirumalani in Berani village of Sindh province in Pakistan.

Asaram came to Ahmedabad in the early 70s and started doing penance on the banks of Sabarmati near Motera area.

His influence spread to different parts of India and around the world in the following decades.

He also has properties worth millions of dollars across India.

His son Narayan Sai is also accused of raping a woman disciple of his father between 2002 and 2005 at their ashram in Surat. The trial in this case is underway.

In the years that followed, a number of key witnesses in the case were attacked or went missing.

Bapu was arrested on August 31, 2013 on several charges under the relevant sections of the POCSO Act and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
