President Xi vows to build strong China

Speaking before the almost 3000 members of the National People's Congress who had earlier abolished term limits on his rule, Xi declared that the Chinese people were "closer now than at any time in history to realising the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation".

Xi's plan to build a "world-class" military by mid-century has also raised concerns about how it plans to use its increasingly modern forces amid regional frictions over Beijng's territorial claims in the South China Sea.

"The Chinese people's honest wish and practical action to contribute to the peace and development of humanity should not be misinterpreted, nor should they be distorted", Xi said, adding that "justice will prevail!"

The Chinese people have been aware since ancient times that "we cannot sit idle and enjoy the fruits of others' work and happiness can only be achieved through great endeavour", he said.

"Dear President Xi Jinping, congratulations on getting re-elected as the President of the People's Republic of China", Modi had said in his message posted in his account on Chinese social media site Weibo.

This precarious situation has always been a source of tension between Taipei and Beijing, but now that Xi can potentially serve as president for life, "he can execute strategies that last decades rather than years", such as regaining control of Taiwan, says CNN. "China also pursues peaceful development and in the same vein China will not occupy an inch of land of others", he said.

Xi said any actions and tricks to split China are certain to meet with the people's condemnation and the punishment.

Courtois plans to stay at Chelsea next season
THIBAUT COURTOIS insisted he is "committed" to Chelsea - and hinted at a new deal this summer. "I will do my best for it". He said:"Obviously I played against him a lot of times and conceded goals through my legs from him before".

To rapturous applause, Mr Xi told the Communist Party faithful in the cavernous chamber that "rejuvenation of the Chinese nation has become the biggest dream of the Chinese people".

Mr Xi is now set up to be China's president for life, after the NPC removed a two-term limit.

There have also been vocal calls for greater autonomy or even independence for Hong Kong in recent years - and China says it is fighting an Islamist separatist insurgency in Xinjiang province.

The new broadcaster will be called Voice of China, the person said, mimicking the U.S. government-funded Voice of America that started up during the Second World War to advance American interests.

"Only those who are accustomed to threatening others will see everyone as a threat", he added. At 2,924 members, China's legislature is the largest in the world.

Xi pledged to expand the Belt and Road, his signature foreign policy initiative of building ports, bridges and railways connecting Europe with Asia - but in an apparent response to the project's critics, said China wasn't seeking hegemony.

China will deepen its reform and opening up, he said, adding that China, while realising its own development, will make greater contribution to the common development and progress of the world, he said.
