"Ordinary Iranians struggle economically and find it hard to celebrate holidays like Nowruz", Trump said before adding: "may light prevail over darkness in this New Year and may the Iranian people enjoy a new day of peace, prosperity and joy".

"In particular, as we discuss Syria or as we discuss regional issues, the role of Iran comes on the table".

Steinitz was among the first to warn that the Iran deal, known as The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, would persuade Arab countries to enrich in uranium. By May 12, Trump must decide whether or not to keep the USA in the nuclear deal by renewing waivers that presently shield Iran from crippling sanctions on its vital oil exports and central bank activities and other areas.

On Monday, Channel 10 reported that for the past two months, American, French, British, and German diplomats have been working behind the scenes to stiffen pressure on Iran's activities as a way to prevent Trump from abandoning the accord.

Britain, France and Germany have proposed new European Union sanctions on Iran over its missile program and its regional role, a confidential document said on Friday, Reuters reported.

In a bid to persuade the US not to pull out of the agreement, France asked the European Union on March 19 to consider new sanctions on Iran due to its involvement in the Syrian civil war and its ballistic missile program.

The proposal is allegedly part of an European Union strategy to appease US President Donald Trump and preserve the Iran nuclear deal.

"We must not exclude Iran's responsibility in the proliferation of ballistic missiles and in its very questionable role in the near- and Middle East", France's Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told reporters as he arrived at a meeting with his counterparts to discuss Iran.

But this year, Mr. Trump said of Iran, "deceit has become official state policy".

However, Reuters noted that the obtained document expresses concern at "transfers of Iranian missiles and missile technology" to Syria and allies of Tehran, such as Houthi rebels in Yemen and Lebanon's Iran-backed Shi'ite Hezbollah.

Ali Sadr Hashemi Nejad, 38, was charged in a six-count indictment filed in federal court in Manhattan accusing him of a role in a scheme to evade US economic sanctions against Iran, prosecutors said.

US sanctions will resume unless Trump issues fresh "waivers" to suspend them on May 12.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Twitter accused the West of "sheer hypocrisy" in selling large quantities of weapons to countries in the region while "whining about Iran's defensive missiles".
