Federal government will support Canada's part in 2026 World Cup bid

There are still 20 North American cities in the running to host the games, part of a 'unified' bid by the U.S., Canada and Mexico, but cities have become increasingly wary of FIFA's demands of host cities.

Those behind the bid are touting the fact that they would not need to build any new stadiums as their list is made up of existing venues, many of which host National Football League and Major League Soccer matches.

"The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest football event in history and our United Bid can be counted on to deliver the experience, the infrastructure and the resources necessary to make this extraordinary event an unprecedented success for FIFA and for all of the member associations in our global football family".

Chicago, the very headquarters of the U.S. Soccer Federation, is one such city that withdrew from the bid. Cities selected as candidates for the United States include Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York/New Jersey, Orlando, Philadelphia, San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle and Washington DC.

While the list released Thursday identified only proposed World Cup markets, Kristick said the bid book has chosen specific stadiums in each market, a group that includes MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey (New York); Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts (Boston); AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas (Dallas); and Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California (San Francisco). "We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the United Bid team and fellow host city candidates as we work to bring the FIFA World Cup back to the Bay Area".

The November budget also saw stamp duty scrapped for first-time buyers purchasing properties under £300,000. Hammond said the OBR was predicting GDP to grow by just 1.5% this year, followed by just 1.3% in 2019.

The reality is that the stunning decision by B.C.to drop out has left Edmonton in an exceptional position to play host to as many as four or more of the 10-12 games likely to end up in Canada.

The final bid submission will go to FIFA Friday.

Morocco are making their fifth bid to host the tournament. "Being selected as part of the North American bid to host the World Cup shows what working together can accomplish".

On the morning the official United 2026 Bid Book was officially presented at FIFA House in Zurich, Edmonton was all in and Vancouver all out of luck.
