This week Le Pen appeared heartened by the strong gains made by the allied anti-immigrant League party in Italy's election.

The new moniker, if approved by members during a mail-in vote, will mark the ultimate break with Le Pen's father, who has called the idea a betrayal.

Le Pen's performance in a pre-election debate with Macron was seen as one of the main reasons her party was defeated.

Bannon was booted from the White House past year amid tensions and stepped down as chairman of the Breitbart News Network in January after being dubbed "Sloppy Steve" by the President for providing information to the author of a controversial White House tell all. In his address, Bannon praised Le Pen's vision of a political fight between nationalists and globalists, even as a few party members warned that his support could damage Le Pen's efforts to cleanse the National Front of its racist stigma.

She also said: "It is because we are Europeans that we are opposed to the European Union!"

Marion Marechal-Le Pen, a former lawmaker, is more socially conservative and economically liberal than her aunt. A new leadership structure and new bylaws are also being unveiled at the two-day congress.

Jean-Marie Le Pen said that in losing heavily to Macron his daughter had "not been equal to the challenge" - a sentiment echoed by many FN members.

National Front leader Marine Le Pen is working to unite her divided party and bolster her ability to lead it as the party meets for the first time since she lost resoundingly to Emmanuel Macron in the final round of the French presidential election last May.
