Pennsylvania reports drop in flu cases, 28 deaths

DE public health officials say the death toll from the flu has risen to 18.

According to HCPH, this is the first pediatric death in the county this flu season. In 2009, 15 were reported. Even still, the California Department of Public Health expects several more weeks of flu activity and the mortality rate could continue to climb because it can be days or weeks after the initial infection that complications can set in. No appointments are necessary.

Like in much of the country, the flu hit Pennsylvania hard this season. Last week saw the fewest number of new cases in Blair since the week ending January 20.

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department says 13 people have died in the county as a result of the flu - one more than last week. All but one had an underlying health condition.

Health experts at Coliseum Medical Centers say they've seen changes in their facility that indicates fewer people are getting sick right here in middle Georgia. "Hopefully, the worst is past us".

Less than 60 percent of workers at nine hospitals in the state, including Inspira Vineland and Shore Medical Center, got the flu vaccine last season, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The flu vaccine may help counter those factors.

More detailed scans showed 8% of those women had signs of an undiagnosed heart attack. The CDC, however, recommends a yearly vaccine for people six months and older.

"But, it does look like we're out of the woods", he said. Other regions, like parts of Europe and Hong Kong, have also reported a flurry of flu activity.

Itskowitz and Yealy agree that it's not too late to get a flu shot.
