We're happy that we got a chance to help our sister stations and their viewers see Mardi Gras in a whole new light. The name of the holiday originated thousands of years ago in Europe because of the binge eating that would occur in the days leading up to Lent, the period of fasting between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. At midnight, police held a ceremonial clearing of Bourbon Street to symbolize the end of the Carnival season. Weeks of parades, balls and street parties mark Carnival in the Crescent City.
