PlayStation 4 firmware 5.50 beta released: Here's what's inside

A select few people, starting today, have access to the beta program and all of its awesome new features that Sony has chose to share with us today via a sneak peek. Included in the newest PS4 Update 5.50 we'll see play time management, quick menu enhancements, importing custom wallpapers via USB and more. Notifications will be sent to the player about the impending cut off allowing them to find a place to save, but there's also the option for an immediate sign out as well.

The improvements coming in PS4 firmware version 5.50 were detailed today over on the PlayStation Blog. There's now a new "This PS4" section, allowing owners to quickly see all the applications that are installed on the current PlayStation 4. You can also zoom and crop your images so they look ideal on your dashboard.

Other details on what may be coming with the PS4 supersampling update will be forthcoming, but at least those of us with lower quality TVs may see a bit of a graphics bump in our favorite games. Restrictions can include total play time, available hours for play, and whether or not to log out as soon as play time has elapsed. This is found under Settings Themes Select Theme Custom Select Image USB Storage Device.

And, at long last, update 5.50 will also allow players to set custom wallpapers as their home screen. If your PS Plus membership is expired, a PS Plus icon with a lock shows up next to your game so you know which games you can play if you re-subscribe. The Library has now been divided into two different areas: One lets you see everything purchased on your account, as normal, while the other only displays what's currently installed on the console.

Sony describes it as: "Certain games already have the "supersampling" benefits as part of their "PS4 Pro Enhanced" feature set, but this new mode can enhance the experience for those games that don't already have the feature".

Speaking of Background Music, you'll now be able to listen to music while streaming a game on PS Now.

Invitations for PlayStation beta have gone out, and allow users to test a new PS4 supersampling mode. The Quick Menu has also been updated with more options when you're listening to music through Spotify. Over the course of a console's life, it's all but guaranteed to get new features, interface overhauls, and tweaks to make it more user-friendly. Sony did not specify when the full release of firmware 5.50 would roll out to all users.
