Sunny skies and southwest winds will push temperatures to 20° Tuesday afternoon after morning lows near zero. High pressure is present across the South, so we will continue to see quiet and calm weather with only a few fair-weather clouds in the sky today.

The reinforcing cold air over the new snow will result in single-digit highs Saturday. We drop down into the upper teens tonight and clouds will slowly move in throughout the night.

On Saturday and Sunday, Minneapolis is forecast to have highs of only about minus-20 degrees (minus-5F), with lows near minus-25 degrees (minus-15F). Highs Sunday will drop back to the 40s with breezy north winds. Temperatures will also be above freezing, even during the overnight hours.

Weather observers said the temperature on top of the highest peak in the USA north-east hit -37 degrees Celsius, a record low.

On Sunday afternoon, expect a slight chance of light rain, maybe 20 percent.

This cold is likely to be the country's most extreme since February 2015 and, over a long duration, will produce dangerously low temperatures and wind chills over large portions of both the central and eastern United States. Hard freezes are very possible with possible wind chill values even lower than the upper 20s. Clouds will clear out during the afternoon and evening but it's going to get COLD.
