Cold spell to stretch through New Year's

Wednesday's high temperature should be around 61 degrees, and the National Weather Service indicates that's pretty much the high for each day through the end of the year.

For Monday's big Penguin Swim, those fearless enough to take the dip can expect mostly sunny skies, with a high of 30 degrees, per the weather service.

Local temperatures will remain below freezing most of the week with a blast of arctic air causing them to plummet this weekend.

Weather service data fro the Hartford-region shows that the record low for December 27th is 0 degrees, set more than a century ago.

On Saturday there is a chance of rain and snow showers in the morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Thursday isn't expected to reach above freezing; the high is 31 even with mostly sunny skies, and wind could gust up to 20 miles per hour. The forecast calls for a 20 percent chance of snow after 8 p.m. Thursday.

For the remainder of the year, the weather forecast for the north valley is for mostly sunny and dry days.

"Monday night right now appears to be the coldest", Hooper said Tuesday.

"At the minimum temperature, it will feel more like -15", said Megan Dodson, meteorologist at the weather service office outside Syracuse. "The (forecast) models are in some disagreement on snowfall". Forecasters say the snap is here for at least the next seven days and could get worse.

Residents can expect very cold temperatures Thursday morning.
