Officials stated that the New York Declaration, a non-binding political declaration unanimously approved in a non-binding resolution in September 2016, "contains numerous provisions that are inconsistent with US immigration and refugee policies and the Trump Administration's immigration principles".
While announcing the U.S. decision to pull out from the landmark initiative, Haley still praised what she framed as Washington's "long-standing moral leadership" in providing support to migrants all over the world, promising that its "generosity will continue".
The United States has withdrawn from a United Nations pact to commit to protect and preserve rights of migrants and refugees.
"The New York Declaration contains numerous provisions that are inconsistent with U.S. immigration and refugee polices and the Trump Administration's immigration principles", she said in a written statement tweeted by the United States mission to the UN.
The United States has been part of the talks since they began in April, the outcome of a political declaration in NY by all 193 members of the United Nations previous year in favor of protecting the rights of migrants and refugees by assuring their safe resettlement and access to employment and education.
"I regret [the] USA decision to disengage from [the] process leading to a United Nations global compact on migration", Miroslav Lajcak tweeted after the decision was announced.
In September 2016, the 193 members of the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a non-binding political declaration called the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, which pledged to uphold the rights of refugees, help them resettle and ensure they have access to education and jobs.

Miroslav Lajcak of Slovakia, the current UN General Assembly president, said Sunday that he regretted the decision.
"No country has done more than the United States, and our generosity will continue", Haley said in a statement. "This should not disrupt the clear, unanimous outcome of the New York Declaration for such a global compact".
The withdrawal comes days before a global conference on migration that starts Monday in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
"As a result, President Donald Trump determined that the United States would end its participation in the compact process".

Under Trump, the US has also withdrawn from many global commitments, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal, the Paris climate agreement and UNESCO, the U.N.'s culture and education agency.
