She is the second woman from her home country to earn the crown.

"She is a woman that nothing is ever too much to ask for".

A similar situation happened in 2014 when Jamaica's representative to the Miss Universe pageant, Kaci Fennell finished in 5th place.

An outspoken South African poet says Jamaica's Davina Bennett deserved to win the Miss Universe crown over her countrywoman, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters.

After Manushi Chhillar's victory at the Miss World 2017, India had pinned high hopes on Shraddha, 21, a media graduate, to end India's 16-year drought as Lara Dutta had last brought back the crown in 2000. Along with that, numerous contestants are recent high school graduates, who delay education just to participate in Miss Universe, and numerous times don't pursue education afterwards. "I think she deserves it", commented Meg Swertlow of E-News following the big announcement.

Nel-Peters earned a yearlong salary and a luxury apartment in New York City for the duration of her reign as well as more prizes.

She then made it to the top 10 where she participated in the evening gown competition wearing a pale bluish-gray dress by designer Val Taguba.

She was held at gunpoint by three carjackers in June as she was driving through Johannesburg, about a month after she was crowned Miss South Africa. The contestant from Colombia, Laura Gonzalez, answered, "I am especially excited about everything I do".

This is the 66th edition of the world-renown beauty pageant, where India was represented by Miss Diva Shraddha Shashidhar, who didn't make it to the list of top 15 finalists. Thailand's Maria Poonlertlarp and Venezuela's Keysi Sayago completed the top 5.

Nel-Peters is from the South African coastal community of Sedgefield in the Western Cape province. Named best in National Costume Contest was Japan's Momoko Abe.
