DPS trooper shot dead near Dallas, suspect in custody

Black has been charged with capital murder in the shooting death of Allen, who had been with the Department of Public Safety since 2002.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that the trooper pulled over Black's vehicle for a traffic violation.

A report by KBTX, citing police scanner traffic, said two women may have been in the suspect's auto when the incident happened.

A Texas state trooper has been shot and killed in Freestone County, the Navarro County Office of Emergency Management confirmed in a tweet Thursday afternoon. Waller County sheriff's deputies initiated a stop and shots were fired, but it was unclear who opened fire from sheriff's reports. Allen died at the scene.

The suspect was apprehended Thursday night near Prairie View, about 110 miles (177 kilometers) south of Fairfield. The trooper has not been identified.

Authorities from multiple agencies are searching for the suspect.

The shooting happened in Freestone County which is about 90 miles southeast of Dallas, Texas.
