Donald Trump Jr. Was in Contact With WikiLeaks During Campaign

Shortly thereafter, Mr. Trump released the emails himself. Trump Jr. tweeted that link two days later, on October 14, 2016, The Atlantic noted.

A real coinkidink: In fact, the communication between WikiLeaks and Trump Jr. was continuing.

Napolitano said it is "no crime" for the president's oldest son to have simply been communicating with WikiLeaks. One message suggested Trump encourage Australia to appoint Assange as USA ambassador.

Trump Jr. downplayed the exchanges as he released them. But the tone and content of the "direct message" Twitter interactions between Junior and whomever runs Wikileaks' account looks a lot less damning than it might have.

Trump Jr. did not reply, for example, when WikiLeaks wrote him to "strongly suggest" that his father push a link it said would help supporters sort through the Clinton leaks, but his father tweeted about WikiLeaks just 15 minutes after the message was sent, and Trump Jr. tweeted out the link two days later. Trump Jr.'s DM came among growing speculation that WikiLeaks had more damaging material to release.

In a statement, Trump Jr.'s lawyer said thousands of documents had been turned over to the committees. Trump Jr. reportedly replied: "Off the record I don't know who that is, but I'll ask around".

A source with knowledge of the meeting said the private Twitter messages were discussed behind the closed doors.

Vice President Mike Pence responded quickly to the report, issuing a statement through his press secretary that he knew nothing about it.

Donald Trump Jr. has handed over documents to the government showing that he had contact with WikiLeaks representatives in the weeks leading up to the 2016 election, according to a new report. Interestingly, The Atlantic story also failed to mention that Assange's internet connection was cut at the time some of the younger Trump's messages were sent.

"WikiLeaks appears to beguile some people into transparency by convincing them that it is in their interest", Assange tweeted.

The judge said he believes some of WikiLeaks' releases have been beneficial for Americans to know, but the organization is, nevertheless, an adversary of the USA government. WikiLeaks has denied that Russian Federation was the source of emails it released, including those from Clinton's campaign chairman, John Podesta.

Democratic congressman Adam Schiff says the report "demonstrates once again a willingness by the highest levels of the Trump campaign to accept foreign assistance".

"There seems to be no reasonable explanation for these messages", Blumenthal said. But negotiations over witnesses broke down last month amid disagreements with Democrats on the panel.

Democrats swiftly reacted to the report, saying Trump Jr. should provide more information.

Timing is everything, Part Two: For a detailed breakdown of events back in 2016, check out this entire timeline on Russian Federation and the Trump campaign put together by CNN's Marshall Cohen. They are part of a long-and largely one-sided-correspondence between WikiLeaks and the president's son that continued until at least July 2017.

He added, "I'm not talking about it as a legal matter..."
